This journey is my own

I have been more fully aware lately how much I care about what people think of me. I don't want them to look down on me, misjudge my motives, criticize me, reject me. I don't want them to get angry with me or hurt my feelings. I want their approval and praise.

Although those things are pretty normal, sometimes they can be an idol that gets in the way of me doing what God wants me to do.

This song from Sara Groves says it much better than I could...

When I stand before the Lord, I'll be standing alone
This journey is my own
Still I want man's advice, and I need man's approval
but this journey is my own
Why would I want to live for man and pay the highest price?
What would it mean to gain the world, only to lose my life?

So much of what I do is to make a good impression
This journey is my own
So much of what I say is to make myself look better
This journey is my own

I have never felt relief like I feel it right now
This journey is my own
'Cause trying to please the world it was breaking me down, it was breaking me down
Now I live and I breathe for an audience of one
Now I live and I breath for an audience of one
Now I live and I breathe for an audience of one
'cause I know this journey is my own

You can live for someone else, and it will only bring you pain

I can't even judge myself.
Only the Lord can say, "Well done"

Seeking God's approval or man's...

Many people, including some of the Jewish leaders, believed in him. But they wouldn't admit it to anyone because of their fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. For they loved human praise more than the praise of God. (John 12:42-43, NLT)

Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10, NIV)

We speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. (1 Thessalonians 2:4, NIV)

Examples of fearing man...

No one would say anything publicly about him [Jesus] for fear of the Jews. (John 7:13, NIV)

When he [Peter] first arrived, he ate with the Gentile Christians, who don't bother with circumcision. But afterward, when some Jewish friends of James came, Peter wouldn't eat with the Gentiles anymore because he was afraid of what these legalists would say. (Galatians 2:12, NLT)

Jesus' example...

Your approval or disapproval means nothing to me, because I know you don't have God's love within you... You gladly honor each other, but you don't care about the honor that comes from God alone. (John 5:41-44, NLT)

Standing before the LORD alone on judgment day...

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. (Matthew 16:27, NIV)

Yes, each of us will have to give a personal account to God. (Romans 14:12, NLT)

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:10, NIV)

And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. (Revelation 22:12, NKJV)

The LORD's promise...

Do not be afraid that some plan conceived behind closed doors will be the end of you. Do not fear anything except the LORD Almighty. He alone is the Holy One. If you fear him, you need fear nothing else. (Isaiah 8:12-13, NLT)

Amen

Your progression of ideas here shows me once again how deeply you are connected. Your ablility to coach others is such a gift. If you could see yourself through my eyes or others you touch or through God's eyes then you would understand what we already know. We trust you because you are safe. We trust you because you do not condemn us when we fail, you do set boundries which reinforce that you care. What a blessing!

awesome! AMEN AND AMEN!
I have something to add tho. The Hebrew in galations says "those of the circumcision" rather than "legalists" because that whole book is about the shedding of blood that circumcision requires. These peeps were asking people to be circumsized because shedding their own blood could make them saved. But, it is the blood of Yeshua Messiah that saves us, not our own. It's not about "the law" but specifically about circumcision, period. If we thin kour own blood saves us then indeed the blood of Christ is of nothing. But, I digress. VERY good post Doug

I'll consider that a "double amen" recommendation... lol

Rev 22:12 always touches my heart, because I use to fear when God comes again, I felt condemned. I no longer fear that but your perspective by adding Is 8:12-13 is so brilliant. I understand 'fear' here to mean reverence - and I so Revere God! Thank you.
