Misnomers
- Saying, "I feel that..." is not an emotion. It's a thought or opinion. Emotions are one word.
- Saying, "I encourage you to..." may or may not be encouraging to the person receiving it. Again, it is an opinion that you have about what might be good for them. But maybe what the person needs to actually feel encouraged is just someone to listen to them, or care, or help.

I'm not sure I agree. I think it's better to decipher what exactly you are feeling but not everyone gets there in one word. You say I have shorthand!?!
I seem to remember there are pages of words that are emotions...and they were just one word in a list from A to Z. Shocked me to find out there were so many options!! You make it so clear here that I can turn it into my opinion...then maybe use it to tell someone else what to do or think. I get it. tlb
Yeah, I often ask people in the groups i lead, "How does that make you feel?" I'm looking for their internal emotion. The response I get is, "I feel like he should love me more." "I feel that I need more self-discipline." "I feel like moving to another city."
In all of those cases you could say the same thing replacing "feel" with "think" or "wish." Using the word "feel" is just a soft way of saying what you're thinking. The're all ideas or opinions, and don't tell me for sure what is going on inside of you. I could guess, but I'm often wrong. So, I say, ok, "But how does that make you FEEL? One word."
Then I get, "Sad." "Hopeless." "Angry." "Livid." "Cheated." "Lonely." Those are emotions.

I liked the list you gave Doug. I have never really thought about my masking things as feelings, when really they are something else. I think I can see where this could cause confusion in communication, especailly when the realtionship is already strained. I printed the list and plan on putting it to good use.
I see your point. I use to think that way Ester. However when I did that- use phrases to describe how I felt rather than 1 work- I was still hiding what exactly the problem was. I have grown to be able to recognize what's eating me and give it name - one word. Some days are bettet than others :)Clarify how 'disorganized' is a feeling. I'm always disorganized. To me that's a state of how you keep your surroundings or yourself - like 'disheveled.'
