What smells?

I've been a bachelor for several years, and making the house smell good hasn't been a top priority. However, a few months ago I decided it was about time, especially because my kids always complained when they came over, lol. (I think it's from all the cabbage I cook!)

So, being cheap and poor, I've tried a couple of things from the dollar store. I started with the Air Wicks. I went through 2 or 3. It always smelled pretty good the first day or two, but not much after that. Then I went to the Glade plug-ins. Again, smelled pretty nice for a day or two, but not much after that. I bought incense sticks. They made the place smell good and smoky for about an hour, and then I had to wash the windows on the inside...

So, help me out. What have you find works the best over the longest period of time for the least maintenance and cost!!!

Try Yankee Candles and their plug- ins and dif things from there. Watch for a sale...

Also my fav stuf comes from The Body Shop and you put drops of oil on the top of a ceramic holder and then a little candle underneath...mix and match the oils. Some are really, really nice.
Some are so strong, you don't need to light the candle...it is kinda fun to pick and chose them.

I use the same things. The incense burner I have though is electric....and candles have such multiple uses, at bath time, etc. Yankee candles smells and last the best.

Febreez all cloth furniture. Next, I usually buy the oils from Bath and Body Works, and the little burner, which are expensive alittle but last a LONG time. Then I buy a huge bag of mini candles for like a dollar so it ends up being about 20 bucks but it lasts 3-6 months! I also buy the wall flowers and those last 6 months as well. Two are 12 bucks but the 2-4 dollar ones only last 30 days. Thats my 2 cents

Hey, I forgot about the easiest thing I do...I love the smell of coffee so I have some tiny dixie size cups of coffee beans sitting out. Works!

Here is where the most odor problem comes from. In florida we usually have everything shut up tight so we can run the airconditioner. It is the cooking that is the problem. Either frying meat in a pan (i.e., smoke), or cooking vegetables, particularly cabbage. The odor seems to linger forever. That’s the problem I need to solve.

Also, what are these wall flowers you're talking about, esher.

I'll have to try the coffee thing, tlb. I never thought of that. I love that aroma too.

The candle thing sounds great but too much fuss and maintenance for me. I'm looking for EASY!

Maybe I just keep a box of baking soda open in the kitchen to let it absorb all the odors???

The wall flowers are like the glad plugins but stronger and last longer. You buy a set of two for 12 I think and then chose your smell at Bath and Body and get 2 for 6. So, it's like 18 bucks but, again that lasts 6 months and you just plug em in.

Burning the candles after you cook smelly stuff actually will cover the smell. (don't you remember when you smoked contaband and covered it with candles so mom didn't know...or was that just my brother!)

Try going into the Yankee Candle or Specialty Gift shops they smell so good. Use your charm to have them show you what works best. I think that potpourri works well, it is a combo of leaves, flowers etc that sits out and they last for months.

If you are shopping and a place smells good to you, ask them what they use. I have a spray can of stuff called "Green Apple" from Bath and Body. They have one call "Pumpkin Spice" and these aren't just a 10 minute smell, they linger and it is nice.

My girls spray their fav purfume in there rooms just so it smells good, even on days they don't wear it. They all believe in the Fabreeze too. That is now a standard college trick for when they are out of clean clothes, too.

The other obvious thing would be to only eat your cabbage on days when the windows/doors can be open for a while!

If the kids are coming and you know that they are...cook a bag of popcorn, that covers about anything!

I always wondered this, why do we have the heat blasing in the winter to keep the cold out and in the summer turn up the a/c to bring it back :-) I love the heat, but in the winter food ordor can even linger in your closets and on your clothes. As much as I hate the cold in the winter - after cooking I open a bedroom window & the patio sliding doors for cross ventilation to get the odor out - just for a few minutes. Then burn my candles. Brisk & fresh.
